When I first envisioned Mamori, I wanted to create something that transcends the ordinary function of a table or stool. For me, it wasn't just about making another piece of furniture it was about crafting an object that carries meaning, evokes emotion, and connects deeply with the person who brings it into their space. Mamori, in Japanese, means protection. This concept is woven into the essence of this creation, both visually and symbolically. As you look at Mamori, you’ll notice that its surface carries the impression of a delicate fabric wrapping the wood. The texture flows upward, starting at the base and rising toward the top, as if offering a gentle embrace. This design choice reflects the idea of protection a nurturing force that surrounds and uplifts.

Mamori a Wabisabi Stool Table

Handmade Craftsmanship with Yakisugi Technique

I chose to work with cedar of Lebanon, a wood known for its beauty, durability, and subtle fragrance. The finishing process involves the ancient Japanese technique of yakisugi (charred wood), which not only enhances the wood’s natural grain but also provides a protective layer. Each piece is hand-charred, brushed, and polished multiple times to achieve a unique tactile and visual effect. Running your hand over the surface of Mamori, you’ll feel the smooth yet textured finish an interplay of opposites, much like life itself. This contrast between the rough charred wood and the smooth polished layers embodies the Wabi-Sabi philosophy, finding beauty in imperfection and transience.

The Symbolism of Mamori

The upward flow of the textured design represents growth, transformation, and protection. Just as the wood rises from the earth, solid and rooted, toward the sky, Momori symbolizes the journey of life always moving forward, always evolving. Its minimalist design is intentional. I wanted Mamori to fit effortlessly into any space, whether as a functional stool, a side table, or simply as a sculptural element. But beyond its functionality, it serves as a quiet reminder to embrace the imperfections in life and to find beauty in the natural flow of things.

Why You Should Make Mamori Yours

Owning Momori means more than adding a beautiful object to your home. It’s about inviting a piece of craftsmanship, history, and philosophy into your life. Every curve, every texture tells a story my story as the artisan who created it, and your story as the person who chooses to welcome it. Momori is not mass-produced; it’s entirely handmade. Each piece is unique, carrying slight variations that make it truly one of a kind. When you bring Mamori into your space, you’re not just buying a table or a stool you’re embracing the idea of protection, growth, and beauty in imperfection. If you’re drawn to the minimalist aesthetic, the warmth of natural wood, and the philosophy of finding elegance in simplicity, then Mamori is for you. It’s a statement of style, a symbol of deeper meaning, and a daily reminder to cherish life’s subtle, imperfect beauty.
